If you’re a DIY’er in the kitchen and like making your own mustards, sauces and jams then you will also enjoy creating your own BBQ sauce. It’s super easy and healthier than most store bought brands and is a great way to customize the flavor to suit your tastes.
This is a base BBQ sauce recipe which is great by itself or you can add other ingredients to it to suit your needs.
Ingredients
- 1/4 cup vegetable or canola oil
- 1 large onion, chopped
- 3 garlic cloves, chopped
- 1 bell pepper, seeded and chopped
- 1/4 cup bourbon
- 1/2 cup cider vinegar
- 1 cup (10 oz can) tomato paste
- 1/2 cup dijon mustard
- 1/4 cup worcestershire sauce
- 1/4 cup soy sauce
- 1/4 cup honey
- 1/2 cup firmly packed dark brown sugar
- 1 teaspoon chili powder
- 1 teaspoon red pepper flakes
- 1 teaspoon cumin
Instructions
- Add oil to sauce pan over medium heat until it starts to shimmer. Add onions, garlic, bell pepper. Cook stirring frequently for 7-10 minutes or until vegetables are tender.
- Add bourbon and cook for 5 minutes or until the alcohol smell is gone
- Add remaining ingredients and simmer for 30-45 minutes, stirring frequently.
- You can leave the bbq sauce chunky or puree it for a smoother consistency. To puree allow to cool and use an immersion or vitamix style blender until sauce is smooth.
